More about Picket's Charge:
In the Battle of Gettysburg, more soldiers fought and died than in any other battle before or since in North American history. 3 July 1863 marked the climax of this historic battle as Confederate General George E. Pickett led a massed infantry assault against Union troops situated on Cemetery Ridge. As Pickett’s 15,000 men marched across the intervening open field they were pounded by artillery and rifle fire. While their decimated ranks reached the Union lines, they were unable to penetrate them, and the disastrous assault produced a staggering 10,000 casualties in just 50 minutes.
